Purpose: Scores the paper surface of drywall before snapping it along the score line.

Reason: Provides a clean, straight cut and prevents the drywall from breaking unevenly.

T-square or straight edge

Both T-squares and straight edges are used for marking straight lines on drywall, but they have slightly different applications and advantages:

Purpose:

Ideal for marking long, straight lines across large drywall panels.

Useful for ensuring parallel lines when marking multiple cuts.

Can also be used for checking the squareness of corners.

Advantages:

Offers a longer edge for greater reach and accuracy.

The perpendicular head helps ensure perpendicular lines to the edge of the drywall.

Can be used for multiple marking tasks beyond drywall.

Cutting Steps:

Measure and mark: Use a tape measure and pencil to mark the desired cut line on the drywall.

Score the paper surface: With a sharp utility knife, score along the marked line, cutting through the paper but not the gypsum core. Apply firm, even pressure.

Snap the board: Place the drywall panel on a sawhorse or other flat surface, with the scored line hanging over the edge. Apply gentle pressure on the un-scored side of the drywall until it snaps along the score line.

Cut the back paper: Flip the drywall over and use the utility knife to cut through the paper backing along the snapped line.

Smooth the edges: Use a rasp or sandpaper to smooth any rough edges on the cut drywall.
